Customer Question: Where do I start when choosing paint colors for a room?

This is a question we frequently get from customers overwhelmed with all the options and choices that go into decorating a room. One of our interior decorators, Joyce Mussano, advises customers to keep it simple:

“Reduce the situation to things that are easy to understand to take some of the pressure off. I always say, color first and design second.

When you’re choosing a color, either yourself or with the assistance of a decorator, it’s important to factor in items from the room you’re painting. Bring a pillow, a tile, a rug, a cabinet door, or a sample of countertop with you to compare with different paint samples. Photos don’t show the correct color. Lighting or the flash can greatly impact how a color shows up in a photo, similar to how filters on Instagram change the colors in a photo. When you’re choosing colors for your walls and trim, you want to see how the paint looks next to the real items that will be in the room.

If you’re not sure, but you’ve narrowed your choice down to a few colors, take some sample pints home with you. Then you can see exactly how the colors look in your home.”

If you’d like to speak with Joyce, or any of our decorators, about decorating your room, give us a call and we can schedule an appointment.
