For most woodwork jobs, a 1-1/2-inch brush will do. However, if you're painting trim wider than 3-inches, you'd be better off with a brush up to 2-1/2-inches wide. You'll use a paintbrush mostly for cutting in when you're painting walls. We think a 2-1/2-inch-wide brush is ideal for most DIYers, but pros sometimes use 3- or 4-inch-wide brushes.
